What first got you into music?

Paul: All 5 of us have similar stories, just hearing certain pieces of music when we were kids, it sparked something within us, something that made us think ‘I want to do that’. I remember hearing The Police song ‘Message In A Bottle’ on my Dad’s radio, that blew my mind. From that moment on, music was the most important thing in my life, it’s the same for all of us.

Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.

Paul: Most of us are in our 50’s now, so we love everything about it, just to still be doing it at this time in life, let alone starting a new band and getting our songs out to people, it’s amazing!

Your new EP is ‘Mid Life Crisis‘. Can you share with us the background of its creation and did any unusual things happen during its creation?

Paul: The song came about from a conversation about getting older, and all the things that come with that. There are definitely some things changing, especially physically, but inside we all feel the same as we did when we were 20. So we tried to reflect some of that in the song.

Where did the idea for ‘Bison Hip’ come from?

Paul: We were messing around with ideas for names, I came up with the Bison part, and I think the ‘Hip’ bit was from a joke about us all needing replacement hips if we went on tour. And that was it, Bison Hip was born.

Where are you from and do you have a stable home or do you prefer traveling?

Paul: We all live in and around Glasgow, in Scotland. We’re all stable family guys, we would love to travel, to go on tour playing our music, and we plan to do that very soon, but we’ll always be looking forward to getting back home.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Paul: It’s definitely blues rock, that’s natural for us as we are all lovers of the blues, and huge rock fans. I’d like to think we bring something unique to it, we want our life stories to be reflected in the music, and we want to bring some of the attitude of our hometown into it too.

Can you write what was the best performance in your career? How do you remember it?

Paul: We’ve all had loads of gigging experience in our lives, but we haven’t done any gigs yet as Bison Hip, mainly because we started the band during lockdown. Ever since then, we’ve been recording. So the best performance is yet to come.

If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?

Paul: Of everyone around today, probably John Mayer. He’s got it all, the guitar skills, great voice, and great songs. That would be a dream come true to open for him!

Who’s your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?

Paul: That’s a tough one, so many of the greats are no longer with us. BB King would have been cool. or Prince, David Bowie, it would have been amazing just to be around that level of talent. Maybe the same as the previous answer, it would be very cool to work with John Mayer. John would probably also include Joe Bonamassa, Eric Gales, some of those guys.

What are your plans for the future?

Paul: We’ve only just started. Once we get the ‘Mid Life Crisis’ EP out, we’ll be back in the studio putting together our 1st album, hopefully to have it out at the end of the year. Then we’ll follow that up with a tour. It’s exciting times for us, we don’t want to stop!

Hey Bison Hip, super nice to have the chance to chat with you.
